Metal survive because they are in a free state and carbonate be converted to metal oxide in the process of extraction because metals are present in the carbonate form and for pure metal we should do two process calcination and roasting .

so for pure metals carbonate be converted.

Answer:

It is easier to obtain metal from its oxide, as compared from its sulphide and carbonate. So prior to reduction, sulphide ores are converted into oxides by roasting and carbonate ores by calcination.
