why should the sodium be immersed in kerosene

Sodium be immersed in kerosene because sodium is a very reactive element and it can react with air and catches fire kerosene breaks the contact of air from the sodium therefore it kept in it.

Because we know that sodium is high in the activity series and can loose electron easily.
When kept in open it reacts with water and oxygen vigorously and catches fire
