It’s because,

It forms a structure of trust and unity, so that the different people all over our country can live together.

It tells us how a government is formed and its functions. It specifies who will have power in the govt. to take which decisions.

It regulates the power of the govt. over us, by limiting it’s power through some constitutional laws and gives us some basic or fundamental citizen’s rights.

These are some functions of the constitution.

But the constitution is made 70 years ago. This makes us think twice.

But the manner how the constituent assembly worked, determined the ultimate importance of the constitution-

•The constitution does not reflect the views of the members of constituent assembly alone. It reflects the views of the country.

•The constituent assembly represented the people of India, though it wasn’t #directly elected by the people. But the assembly consisted of members from different regions belonging to different castes, religions and political parties. So they all had different views, yet worked together to bring an efficient constitution.

•The constituent assembly worked in a systematic, open and consensual manner. As I’ve said before, this manner of their working lead to a successful and efficient form of

constitution.

(Consensual manner : Process involving agreement from all ‘points of views’ i.e., from all members)

#the constituent assembly was elected mainly by the members of the Provincial Legislatures of that time.

The elections were held in July 1946.
