All food growing and manufacturing has energy input and generally destruction of natural environment. For every bit of meat you eat an animal had to die for you to be able to eat meat.

By wasting food you are causing more animals to die and more of the natural environment to be destroyed to make way for grain crops, vegetables, fruit and nut trees. Think of all the meat you wasted and the animals who had to die for your wastage that may have lived a bit longer if you and others only bought the meat you were to use. Think of the extra trees bulldozed for crop growing cutting the amount of oxygen they could have produced contributing to the degradation of the atmosphere. You may think the amount you waste is small but there are 7 billion people in the world and if they were all wasteful with their food that is a lot of slaughtered animals needlessly killed, a lot of native animals without a place to thrive from the extra forest cleared for food production. With many people now living in cities they do not realize the damage being done to the environment so they can be fed well. People blame the farmers for degrading the environment but if the demand for more and more food was not there would be less reason to clear woodlands and degrading the environment.
