Because the measurement depends on the lengths of the wire on either side of the balance point - call them and b - for example:
R2 = R1 * a / b
If, say, b is small - 10 cm - then a 1 cm error in measuring b will cause a 10% error due to the error in measuring b.
If b is around 50 then 1 / 50 = .02 or a 2% error for the measurement of b.
