Why should we keep a cork on the mouth of the flask when a chemical reaction is carried out in it, to verify the lsw of conservation of mass?

since in the law of conservation of mass one of the products is a gas hence to let the gas inside the flask and not leave the flask a cork is used so that the mass of reactant is equal to mass of products.
