We shouldn't eat mushrooms when they are poisonous and will kill or damage us. ... If you eat known mushrooms for their psychoactive effect eat a very small amount to know how your body and brain react. Even if you are experienced, don't decide you don't feel anything and then to more, which becomes too much.

Answer:

The simple answer to this is that you can’t tell the difference without identifying the individual mushroom you have found. Some poisonous mushrooms can kill, so you must be able to accurately name the fungus and be 100% sure of what it is before consumption.

There are some apparent rules for picking safe mushrooms.

Some good rules apply for avoiding poisonous mushrooms if you are a novice.

1. Avoid mushrooms with white gills, a skirt or ring on the stem and a bulbous.

2. Avoid mushrooms with red on the cap or stem.

3. Finally don’t consume any mushrooms unless you are 100% sure of what they are.

These rules don’t mean all other mushrooms are safe but help rule out some of the nastier types.
