You ask, “Why should we not look down on people who clean dirty places?” but the real question is “Why should we not look down on anyone?” or “Why should I treat anyone with respect?” There are a myriad reasons why, but I’ll give you seven.

First, from a selfish perspective, you don’t know what a person may offer you or how they may harm you, now or in the future. They may be a coiled venomous snake or a benevolent angel in disguise. Second, also from a selfish perspective, you don’t know when or how you might come to depend on that person. If and when you do develop a dependence, you’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Third, you don’t know how you may be or how you may become connected to that person. That “other” may be your wife’s second cousin, whom you end up sitting next to at Thanksgiving dinner. Awkward! Fourth, you paint yourself into a social corner through harsh judgement of others, and this can affect other personal and professional relationships. You will be judged in much the same way in return and suffer for it. Fifth, you and the “other” are not so different: you both are human beings who wake up, eat, drink. poop, pee, have sex, struggle, go to work, pay taxes, and die. Fundamentally, you are no better than them, nor they you. Sixth, evidence suggests that strengthening compassion and empathy for the “other” will make you a more contented individual. Seventh, looking down on or judging the “other” is usually the result of a fragile ego, one that requires another to be in the muck to feel as if one is on dry land. This is weakness.

There’s a reason that they say, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” Cleaners, like lawyers, sales clerks, doctors, builders, and housewives perform necessary functions in our society and our lives. Without them, our waste bins spill over under our desks at work, our public parks pile up with litter, our carpets remain full of dog pee, and our septic tanks overflow in our back yards. You need them, sometimes in ways that are invisible to you. They deserve the same respect that a person in any other profession deserves. They deserve the same respect as you.
