this is done so that there are no air bubbles formed ( no air is trapped between the slide and cover slip) and we can observe the specimen clearly without any hindrance .

The cover slip is gently pressed down to :
(a) crush the cells so that the organelles can be seen distinctly
(b) remove extra stain and water
(c) allow the entry of glycerine into the slide
(d) spread the cells uniformly
