Question
Why should we segregate different types of wastes ? Give advantages of a twin bin system.
ANSWER :
First ,
meaning of word-
SEGREGATE : To divide, to separate
It is important to segregate different types of wastes because -
There are two different types of wastes,
1. Bio-degradable wastes : The word usually mean, bio = living organisms, degradable = decomposable. So, it means that the materials which can be broken down into simpler substance by micro-organisms are called bio-degradable wastes.
Examples : Paper, Clothes, Vegetable wastes, Cardboard etc.
2. Non bio-degradable wastes : The materials which cannot be broken down into simpler substances by micro-organism are called non bio-degradable wastes.
Examples : Poly bags, Batteries, Glasses etc.
So,
If we mix both bio-degradable wastes and non bio-degradable wastes, the non bio-degradable wastes will not decompose and cause soil pollution as they cannot be broken down into simpler substances by the micro-organisms.
Therefore,
It is good to separate the wastes differently.
To separate both wastes Twin Bin System can be applied.
Twin Bin System :
- There would be two different bins.
- The BLUE COLOURED BIN : where the biodegradable wastes would be thrown.
- The RED COLOURED BIN : where the non biodegradable wastes would be thrown.
Now,
Advantages of twin bin system :
- The biodegradable wastes and non biodegradable wastes will be separated.
- The biodegradable wastes can be used for making compost.
- The non biodegradable wastes can be taken for recycling.
