Answer:

To measure the current flowing through branch we put ammeter in series as current in series is same. One point also to be consider here that ideally ammeter has zero resistance but practically it's has a low value of resistance. So such low value of resistance does not affect the current flowing through the branch

Now let us consider we place ammeter parallel to the branch in which we want to measure current ,but in parallel connection current flow is not same so our basic purpose is not fulfill and as u remember it has low value of resistance therefore a major portion of current flow through it which can damage the instrument and allow low current in branch under observation
