It is advised not to hold the thermometer by its bulb while reading the temperature because the level of Mercury increases due to our body temperature and effect the actual reading. We know that bulb of a thermometer contains the Mercury fluid.
This Mercury fluid expands on heating and contract on cooling. Hence, directly touching the bulb of thermometer will allow it to take heat and expands before its actual use.
This will not give correct reading.
