Plants transport sugars through their phloem. Like the xylem, phloem is made up of tubes of cells connected end to end. However, unlike the cells of the xylem, the sieve tubes and companion cells of phloem aren’t dead The cells of phloem transport ions and sugars across their membranes in order to start the process of sugar transport.

Plants move sugar through their phloem by actively transporting solutes in order to manipulate the flow of water.

Turgor pressure in the phloem is increased in areas of the plant where sugars are available (sources) and decreased in areas of the plant where sugars are needed
