Silver metal is used to coat one side of the mirror because silver is a good reflctor,it reflects all the light rays coming on its surface and hence we are able to see our face.

Metals are the most commonly used mirror coatings. Because of their reflectivity, layers of aluminum and silver are often used. Silver is the most reflective across the visible spectrum, reflecting 95 percent of light. Aluminum is slightly less reflective yet still can reflect 90 percent of light. A silver coated piece of glass makes a great mirror with a layer of silver only a few atoms think. This is cheap but silver tarnishes easily in air so the back side of the mirror is painted to protect the silver while the front side protected by glass is highly reflective.
