why single bond is stronger than double bond

Single bond is stronger than double bond because Bond strength and stability are not the same thing. If you will check the bond dissociation energies listed in your text, you will find that the C to C triple bond is stronger than the C to C double bond -- and it is in turn stronger than the C to C single bond. However, the triple bond represents a region of greater inter-atomic electron density than that of the double bond who's electron density is likewise greater than that of a single bond. This means that the electrons binding multiple bonded atoms are more vulnerable to attack by electron-seeking species.

Single bond is a bond formed by axial overlap of orbitals i.e the orbitals lying in the same axis. Thus, when they overlap sigma bond is formed . Remember sigma bond is formed when there is overlap along the internuclear axis. Double bond is formed after sigma bond has been formed i.e after internuclear overlapping of orbitals, sideways overlap of orbitals takes place if they are in the same plane. To do more overlapping, the unhybridised orbitals come close to each other and press the sigma bond closer to lessen the bond length thus loosing energy to make double bond more stable and strengthen it..
