why single inverted commas are used in this sentence and why double inverted commas can't be used?
the sentence is -
'How you shout at the little child ! what does he know ?' his wife would protest.

because double inverted commas ate used to emphasise any word but here we only have to separate the reported speech and reported verb that is why we have just used inverted commas
