Answer: A cation is always smaller than the parent atom. This is due to the increase in the effective charge or Z effective. Due to the decrease in the number of electrons the nuclear charge increases and thus the nucleus holds on to the electrons with more strength and power and thus size decreases. That is why cation has smaller size than parent atom.
