The phenomenon that creates this is scattering of light.
During sunrise and sunset, the Sun is located at the horizon. Horizon is the place where the sky and Earth appear to meet.
The white light from the Sun contains several colors of different wavelengths.
The light of shorter wavelength like the blue light get scattered by the particles present in the atmosphere hence it doesn't reach our eyes. But light of longer wavelength that is red light can travel long distance and hence reaches our eyes.
This is the reason why sky appears red during sunrise and sunset

Sky appears red because of the natural phenomenon scattering of light.Sunlight passes through thicker layers of air and larger distance in atmosphere before reaching our eye.Bluish color of sky have shorter wavelenght.Light that reaches our eye have longer wavelenght and this give rise to reddish appearance of sun.
