In winter, the sun is always towards the South and the northern facing parts of any mountain are in perpetual shadow. However, in summer, the sun will not migrate as much to the North as it migrated to the South in winter.

The very vegetation and ecosystem of the forests on the north and south sides of a mountain tend to be different due to this variation of sunlight.
