SO2 act as reducing agent in present of moisture due to it produce nescent hydrogen. this reaction is in the following bellow:
SO2+H2O=H2SO4+2H
in alkaline medium alkali nutralises Acid H2SO4.thus reaction goes to forward direction and more nescent hydrogens are produced.
but in acidic medium acid suppressed this equilibrium.
thus SO2 actsbad a strong reducing agent in alkaline medium than in acidic medium.
