As the seeds respire, they are taking in oxygen and respiring out carbon dioxide, but the carbon dioxide is absorbed by the calcium hydroxide. As a result, the amount of air in the sealed test tube actually decreases and water rises in the test tube.

It can be used as it is used to absorb co2 produced by seeds.
