Why sodium hydroxide reacts with zinc metal?

Zinc reacts with Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form Sodium Zincate and liberates hydrogen gas.
Zinc does not react in a way it does with acids.
In this reaction Zinc displaces Hydrogen , rather than displacing NaOH
Hence,this reaction is an eg: of redox reaction [ oxidation - reduction reaction ]
Zn + 2NaOH ----> Na₂ZnO₂ + H₂
