Sodium is an EXTREMLY reactive metal which is placed higher than most other commonly used metals in the Metal Activity series.
When sodium is placed in air it reacts with air at room temperature giving out a yellow light and produces heat.This is an Exothermic reaction..Hence to preserve sodium its kept in such solvents which cannot dissolve air within themselves.Kerosene is an example of such a solvent...Hence Sodium is kept under kerosene....For your knowledge-Potassium is too soted under kerosene as it reacts with air producing a Lilac(Pinkish) colour and heat.
