Sodium is a reactive metal which reacts with water to form Sodium Hydroxide

INDIAMadarchod: but what is the reason behind explosion?
vreddyv2003: Sodium explodes because it loses its valence electron in water, and when enough atoms do it,they repel each other at high speeds.
