soft magnet doesn't show any hysteresis. that means when you remove the magnetic field, the magnetic property of materials don't hold. whereas in hard magnets, magnetic properties remain even after removing the magnetic field.
therefore a soft iron is temporary magnet while steel is permanent.

Soft Iron is a temporary magnet because the magnetic domains shifted towards the direction of a magnetic field can be shifted back to the initial state. While steel is a permanent magnet because the atoms that rearrange themselves in a manner makes steel permanent.
