Because soil is the fundamental resource. All human activity and accomplishment could realistically be undone by unsustainable practices - this has happened before , at times in earths history to civilizations that were insulated from each other in ways that they are no longer. Soil is second only to water on the scale of devastating effects from mismanagement and waste
