why solid ice floats on water ?

As it cools further and freezes into ice, it actually becomes less dense. ... Ice floats because it is about 9% less dense than liquid water. Ice floats because it is less dense than the water. Something denser than water, like a rock, will sink to the bottom. ... As water cools and freezes, it becomes less dense due to the unique nature of hydrogen bonds
