when heat is added atoms of the solids start vibrating faster as a result the spaces b/w atoms increases too hence leading to their expansion and vice versa

WHEN HEAT IS SUPPLIED TO SOLIDS.. THEIR MOLECULES BECOME EXCITED AND OSCILLATE FASTER RANDOMLY.. SO SOLIDS EXPAND...
COOLING ENSURES MORE COMPACTNESS IN THE MOLECULES AND THEY DO COME MORE CLOSER AND ARRANGE THEMSELVES IN A MORE COMPACT MANNER .SO SOLIDS CONTRACT
