why some people in the community are respected ?

Why are some people respected whereas others are not?
While pondering on this question, i started off by thinking whom do i really respect? I realised that there are not many.
1. My school-time football coach - For the confidence and trust he showed in me. He made me believe that i am good at the sport, and ensured that i deliver.
2. My ex girlfriend - For all the positivity. She has gifted me an inquisitive mind.
3. My mom - For absolutely no reason.
These are the very few people who have touched my life. So, for me, i respect those who have made an impact.
To generalise, i can say that people respect those who have in some way or the other, made a difference to their life.
Having said all this, the tone of your question points towards the respect people show, and not the respect that people feel. For instance, a lot of people at my workplace 'show' respect to our super boss; that makes him a respected gentleman. However, a majority of the same lot curse him when he is not around.Well, ahem, so you know.
The next time you see someone being respected, ask yourself if you feel the same for that person. If the answer is 'yes', ask yourself, 'why?'. You will then get an answer for your question.
People basically as we understand are a rational beings and so whoever gets a respect from the community definitely did something that other people couldn't do. So, my point is that if some people in the community are respected then those people might have earned by their ordinary work or achievements in an extraordinary way.
