The lines which you see on the road are there for a reason. The road markings which you see on the road are meant to provide guidance for disciplined and safe driving. It helps in regulating the traffic and avoids confusion.
A continuous white line separates the traffic in both directions, just as a broken white line, but the drivers are not supposed to cross the line for overtaking or any other purpose.
The yellow line indicates that passing or overtaking a vehicle is allowed, but crossing the yellow line is not allowed. This is why, a single yellow line is also drawn on the side of the lanes, indicating the end of the road.
