because sound cannot travel through vacuum. It needs a medium. While the electromagnetic waves can travel through vacuum e.g sun light.

OishiBanerjee: No , when sound waves travel, there is constant interconversion of potential to kinetic energy so it is called mechanical wave
Anonymous: the question is why sound waves are called mechanical waves not how it travels and i have given a simple answer
OishiBanerjee: It is not how it travels, it is the basic concept behind it being called a mechanical wave
Anonymous: But my answer is also not wrong.
OishiBanerjee: Did I tell that ur answer is wrong?????
