Why sound requires a material medium for its propagation?

Sound as we know is composed of waves(transverse and longitudinal).

These waves are formed due to vibrations from the source. Correct?

Now these vibrations can only occur when when it transfers energy due to collisions between the material particles.

If there are no particles in a medium, then this transfer is not possible.

Hence a medium is necessary for propagation.
