why south pole is considered near the "Geographic North" and north pole of the hypothetical magnet is considered to be near the "Geographic South" of the earth.

Because South pole directs it towards the North pole of the Earth (called Geographic north) while the north pole directs it towards the south pole of the Earth (called Geographic south). For this, a bar magnet rests in north-south direction when suspended freely.
