why specific gravity is unitless

it is the ratio of density of object to density of water
both in num. and deno. it is density
so units will get cancelled out

The term can also refer to the ratio of the density of dry air at standard  temperature  & pressure , although this specification is less often used .
Specific Gravity is the dimensions quantity that it is not expressed in units
