Why speed of a particle cannot be negative

speed Is a scalar quantity and the scalar quantities are always magnitude dependent only ....since we know magnitude of any body cannot be negative...
thus speed cannot be negative....we can say that the speed can be decresed or a body can be retarded when acceleration and velocity are in opposite direction...but speed cannot be negative. ..
