The egg and sperm each contain one set of chromosomes. ... To ensure that no more than one sperm fertilizes the egg, once the acrosomal reactions take place at one location of the egg membrane, the egg releases proteins in other locations to prevent other sperm from fusing with the egg.

Answer:

It's a matter of chromosomes.

The human body has 46 chromosomes, which are in pairs. We have 23 homologous pairs. When the gamete or sex cell, (sperm in males, ovum/egg in females) is formed, it contains half of the chromosomes needed to make a person—one from each pair.

Since the sperm has half the information and the egg contains the other half, one sperm plus one egg equals one person. More chromosomes are not better, and such a zygote (fertilised egg) would most likely not live to be born.
