sponge is a solid because it has all the characteristics of a solid. we are able to compress it because it has tiny holes and the air is trapped inside it so when we compress it the air is expelled out

Hey Mate!
Your answer is here..
__________
A sponge is considered as solid as it has minute holes in which the air is trapped. When we press the sponge, the same air is released and thus we are able to compress it. It helps sponge to regain its shape and mass. In short terms, we can say that sponge is a conpressible solid.
In the same way, rubber is a solid that has definite shape and volume like other solids. However, when a certain force is applied on rubber makes it change its shape but when it is released, it gains its original shape back. That is why rubber is also considered as a solid.
