✿ Consider a body placed on the rough horizontal surface .The force of gravity is cancelled by normal reaction of the surface .
✿ When the body is pushed horizontally, the body moves and then stops this shows a retarding force is acting on the body .
✿ In general when a body slides on another body a retarding force tries to resist the motion of the body . This retarding force is called frictional force .
✿ If force is not applied, there is no frictional force. As the applied force increases, the frictional force also increases .
✿ When the direction of applied force is Reversed, the direction of friction is also reversed.
✿ Hence we can say that the Frictional force is Self adjusting force .

Static friction is recognised as a self-adjusting force because it wants the objects to remain at rest not move .
So if an external force is applied , the static friction force will be equal to the magnitude of the external force .
