Airplanes are streamlined so that they experience less friction with the air around them as they fly. Friction slows the airplane down and causes it to consume more fuel, so reducing friction is important. Since airplanes fly at high speed and do not ride on wheels, friction with the air is the main factor in fuel consumption. The faster the aircraft is designed to fly, the more streamlined it tends to be. It becomes a serious issue at supersonic speeds.
Most of the noise you hear in flight while riding in a large jet airliner comes from friction between the air outside and the airplane. Even in an ordinary jet, friction with the air can heat the skin of the airplane up by as much as 30°
