Why substrate is connected to source in FET?

mosfet is a type of field effect transistor( fet). it has an insulated gate , whose voltage determines the conductivity with amount of applied voltage can be used for amplifying or switching signal. it is connected to it because the drain to land signals can be semi conducted .
