When there is lack of oxygen in our muscle cells, another pathway for the breakdown of pyruvate (3 carbon molecule) is taken where it is converted into lactic acid+ energy.Lactic acid is also a 3- carbon molecule.This build up or accumulation of lactic acid in our muscle cells during sudden activities like running, sprinting, exercising, etc leads to muscle cramps.
