during sunrise and sunset the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere becoz they are very close close to horizon therefore light other than red is scattered away.most of the red light which is the least scattered enter to our eyes hence the sun and sky appear red.

Hey mate..

What actually happens is that Light from the Sun in the evening or morning near the horizon passes through thicker layers of air and larger distances from our earth's atnosphere before reaching our eyes.Near the horizon, most of the blue light and shorter wavelengths are scattered away by the paricles. Therefore, tge light that reaches our eye are of longer wavelengths. This gives us the reddish appearance of the sun.
