Why sun rise and sun set make the sky red

Light from the Sun near the horizon passes through thicker layers of airand longer distance .Most of the blue light and shorter wavelengths of sunlight are scattered away by the particles. Light of larger wavelength reaches us giving thereddish appearance

Due to atmospheric refraction only light of higher wavelength which is red is seen to our eyes thus the sky appears red
