The "sunflower" is actually an inflorescence (cluster of flowers) called a "head." There are two kinds of flowers in the head: the outer ring of petal-like sterile ray flowers and inner small dark fertile disk flowers. You could pick off one of the ray flowers or a single disk flower to provide single flowers to your instructor!

Sunflower cannot be stated as a flower because it has lost the ability to reproduce. It has not gamets, sepals, petals, etc.
Actually, it is a bunch of many, many flowers (like a bouquet) that have done its reproduction and the inner side of the bouquet is remaining.
