The requisite of linearity means that Superposition Theorem is only applicable for determining voltage and current, not power!!! Power dissipations, being nonlinear functions, do not algebraically add to an accurate total when only one source is considered at a time.

Superposition theorem not applied to non-linear circuit:

  • The prerequisite for applying the superposition theorem for any circuit is presence of linearity of the circuit.
  • As the theorem is applied to find out voltage and current across the different elements of the circuit for which the voltage and current from each source is calculated and then added up so the value of voltage and current across each element is found out.
  • Since this circuit only deals with voltage and current cannot power the linearity of the circuit is important.
