Why Surat is often called the Manchester of the east ?

Surat, also Kanpur, has been traditionally known for its huge textile industry. India used to be a British colony earlier, and therefore, as a comparative system (that we Indians believe in, so much), we decided to callit the Manchester of India. Becausesurat is known for diamonds.

I think because it was the first place of India where they started their trade and afterwards...they made about all Indian slaves....
