They do not work because diseases like common cold are viruses and taking medicines such as antibiotics do not work because viruses have different structures and shapes they unlike bacteria they simply move into your cells and attack them and starts replicating themselves and that's why some antibiotics can't come in use they just simply reduce the effectiveness of it but not actually terminates it.

Common cold is caused by virus and viruses are obligate parasites. They use our cell machinery to multiply and taking any medicine will mean that we are damaging our own cells. On the other hand, bacterias have specific functions which are necessary for them to survive in our body, taking medicines blocks these functions and the bacteria dies. But, viruses do not have any special feature that we can useto destroy them. Therefore, taking medicines doesnt reduce the severity of diration of disease if we have common cold.
