Why tamil is called as one of a dravidan language ?

Tamil is called as one of the Dravidan language because of the presence of the Chola kingdom in their areas. Raja raja 1 and rajendra chola are the most powerful rulers who promoted dravadian style of construction and language. So Tamil was promoted by them and is called As a dravadian language.
