The Eastern Ghats are lower in altitude than the western ghats. This makes the places lying in the Eastern Ghats fall in the rain shadow region.
This makes the monsoon rains lose its moisture on the western slopes of the Western Ghats and the rest of the plateau and the eastern ghats gets scanty rainfall.
Because of this Tamil Nadu (Chennai) gets less rain fall during South West Monsson.
TamilNadu receives abundant rain fall during Retreating monsoon.
