Tapetum is the innermost layer of the anther wall. The cells of this layer has large nuclei and cytoplasm. DNA content of these cells increases due to multinucleate condition (syntitium), endomitosis (karyokinesis not followed by cytokinesis) and polyteny (increase in number of chromonema per chromosome) formation of restitution nuclei ( a cell nucleus which contains double number of nuclei which is due to the failure of completion of division during mitosis) and endoreduplication (replication of nuclear genome in absence of mitosis).

Tapetal cells are very big cells which have more than one nucleus . They help in growth and development of pollen grains. Tapetal cells undergo endomitosis in which nucleus divides with in nuclear membrane ,but cytokinesis does not occur. Because of which they become bi/ multi nucleate.
